The southern city Tartu is the second largest in Estonia and the atmosphere is somewhat different from that of Tallin. To my mind, this is because the Estonians love to be on the coast and this place is as far from it as they could ever want to be… so maybe everybody is a bit bored here.
But there is no real reason to be bored here. This is a university town and so there is good night life and plenty of ancient ruins and leafy parks. Perhaps Tartu´s most important historical monument is St. John´s Church which has one thousand terracotta sculptures on display inside. There is also the art museum which looks like it is about to fall over – apparently its a safe building…!
