Heading west from Tallin to the coast you’ll eventually come to Haapsalu, a pleasant natured seaside resort that was popular in the 19th century with Russian royals. Walks around this town will always bring you to the sea front and you can actually make a round tour of the town by simply strolling along the front.
Wooden carvings decorate the roofs and windows of old and dignified houses and everywhere you go, the all-observing clock-tower of the haunted Episcopal castle will follow you.
The castle is famed for its ghost: A white lady that is claimed to be the lover of one of the bishops in charge here in the middle ages. The bishop used to smuggle her into the church by dressing her up as a choir boy, but eventually they got caught and were both put to death in painful ways that were symptomatic of those superstitious times. She now appears at one of the windows of the castle on moonlit nights.
